María Cristina Kiehr, soprano Concerto Soave "Si dolce è'l tormento" is an exquisite and charming canzonetta in triple meter, likely the most poignant song found in Milanuzzi's compilation, "Quarto Scherzo delle Ariose Vaghezze," published in Venice in 1624. This print not only features the bass continuo line but also includes the alphabet notation for the baroque guitar accompaniment. Within the same collection, one can also discover additional compositions by Monteverdi, such as "Ohimè ch'io cado" and "La mia Turca." The strophic songs by Monteverdi featured in Quarto scherzo were later reissued in his Scherzi musicali of 1632. "Si dolce è'l tormento" exemplifies Monteverdi's mastery in creating richness with minimal melodic elements. The two extended phrases, each descending through an octave, acquire an unanticipated flair through well-defined, symmetrical shifts in tonal center (from D to F to D) and, in the second phrase, the inclusion of repeated 7-6 suspensions.
