As part of our 'Talking helps' Conversation series we spoke to Sarah about her experiences living with undiagnosed binge eating disorder for over 12 years. It began for Sarah as a teenage girl. She tells us about how a falling out with her friendship group at high school made her feel really lonely and isolated. She started to engage in eating behaviours with food and it started to give her comfort. Food would numb those feelings of unworthiness and hopelessness and it was something that she lived with in silence and shame for 12 years. She talks about how the advent of Instagram, where people are always looking for the perfect photo with filters and Photoshop. When she didn't see herself represented on those perfect photos, she started thinking that there's something wrong with her body. At that point she didn't even know that binge eating disorder existed and because it is one of those eating disorders that is not as commonly spoken about as the other ones, she didn't have that awareness or know that she could reach out to talk about it. Just knowing that the support is there to talk to expert people one to one has helped her through. The eating disorder had taken over her life so reconnecting with her values and what was important to her was the turning point. The main barrier for Sarah was the lack of knowledge about the eating disorder. Because she wasn't aware of its existence, she didn't know how to seek help. And she didn't even know that The Butterfly Foundation's helpline could help with that thing. Speaking to people and sharing their story of binge eating helped no end. She believes that even if you're not struggling with an eating disorder, or food, if you're not feeling good in your body then it's really important to speak to someone about it. You shouldn't feel unworthy in your body and speaking to experts who can help is vital. Anyone of any age, gender, culture or background can experience eating or body image concerns. Watch our full video series to see that there are as many different eating disorders as the people who experience them. You'll see that eating or body image concerns can have a serious impact on your life. However, you're not alone, and you don't need to do it all by yourself.
