A shoe was thrown at Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai inside the Supreme Court courtroom - a rare and shocking incident that has prompted urgent national debate. Was this an act aimed only at an individual judge, or does it signal something deeper: an attack on the judiciary as an institution, a worrying mainstreaming of hate, or the rise of impunity for politically or religiously-motivated violence? In this video we unpack the incident and its implications: • What happened in the courtroom and the immediate responses from the judiciary, Bar Council and political leadership. • Why the question of motive matters - including public speculation about identity, religion or political grievance - and why we must be careful about conclusions until facts emerge. • How institutional trust is damaged when attacks on judges are treated as isolated incidents rather than symptoms of a wider pattern. • The danger of normalising hate speech and the “mainstreaming” of violent reactions on social media. • What a proportionate public and legal response should look like - accountability, protection for judges, and safeguarding institutions that uphold constitutional rights. This is not just about one act of violence. It is about how a republic protects its institutions - and what happens when ordinary citizens begin to doubt those institutions’ neutrality and safety. We look at legal, social and political angles and ask: what must be done to restore trust and security? 🔔 If you found this analysis useful, like the video and subscribe.
