Variationen und Fuge über ein hebräisches Volkslied 16:02 ∙ Recording: Rudolfinum, Prague • 2004 [source unknown] On September 8, 1942, Viktor Ullmann was deported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp. By the time of his deportation, his list of works had reached 41 opus numbers and included three piano sonatas, song cycles, operas, and his piano concerto. Most of these works have been lost. The manuscripts probably disappeared during the occupation. Fifteen prints that Ullmann published privately and entrusted to a friend for safekeeping have survived. The Symphony No. 2 is actually a realization of Ullmann’s Piano Sonata No. 7 by Bernhard Wulff, who believes that the Sonata’s manuscript represents a short score. Ullmann titled the Sonata “Theresienstadt Sketchbook,” and its pages are covered with ideas for orchestration. On October 16, 1944, Ullmann was deported together with Pavel Haas and Hans Krása to the Auschwitz extermination camp, where he was killed in the gas chambers two days later.
