More ancient Egyptian queens, Ptolemaic edition! Arsinoe II was the daughter of the founder of the Ptolemaic dynasty, Ptolemy I Soter, who was a general under Alexander the Great. She became the queen of Macedonia, Anatolian and Thrace through marriage to King Lysimachus, while she was only 15 years old, and he was 60. After his death, Arsinoe entered into a political marriage with her half brother Ptolemy Keraunos, in order to unite her kingdoms with Egypt. She eventually married a third time, to her younger brother Ptolemy II, and became co-regent and Pharaoh of Egypt. Arsinoe was very conscious of her image, being sure to represent herself as the perfect Greek matron. We have plenty of coins that show as much, along with her addition of subtle ram's horns, to show her direct connection to Alexander the Great. It isn't 100% sure if this beautiful carved amethyst (c. 300 BCE) represents Arsinoe, but it does look like other contemporary representation of her, and it's an astonishing testament to the craftsmanship of her time. #ancienthistoryjewelrystories #ancientgreekhistory #ancientegyptianhistory #ancientgreekjewelry #ancientegyptianjewelry #womeninhistory #ancientqueens #ptolemaicegypt #amethyst #historynerd #historylover #jewelrylover #jewelrystories #moonhoneyjewelry #arsinoeii
