50 Students Injured After ST Bus Falls Into Canal In Palghar

Fifty-five passengers, mostly college students, travelling in a Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus, escaped with minor bruises and injuries after the driver lost control of the vehicle, swerved off the road and landed it among bushes and trees in Wada taluka of Palghar district on Tuesday. A couple, Ramnavmi Prasad (50) and Suman (45), sustained fractures and are under treatment at Thane civil hospital. The driver and conductor, who also sustained injuries, were admitted to Wada rural hospital. The bus, headed from Pivali village to Wada city, was packed with over 40 students and 13 adults. It is a regular transport mode for students of Swami Vivekanand Junior College and A L Chandavarkar Junior College in Wada. Around 6.45am, when it reached Jambhulpada village in Wada, the driver, Kashinath Jadhav, allegedly lost control of the vehicle. As the road was wet and slippery due to rain, the driver tried to control the bus but it went off the road. The passengers began screaming but the driver ensured the bus did not topple over. As soon as it hit a tree and came to a halt, the students rushed out of the bus and made frantic calls to their parents, who rushed to the spot. Villagers offered the students water and comfort till help arrived. The students were taken to hospital, where they were treated. They said the road was slippery and the driver was speeding but Jadhav told police he was trying to save a woman who suddenly came in front of the bus while crossing. A compensation of Rs1,000 was provided to each victim by MSRTC.
