Built for the 2010 World Cup and meant to be specifically used for football, the Moses Mabhida stadium has been shunned by local professional teams who choose to use other surrounding stadiums and has fallen into disrepair in recent years. Built on municipal land, the entire Moses Mabhida precinct is out of reach to local junior and amateur football clubs. No curtain-raisers are played on the main field when there are big matches there, and the outer fields are beyond the financial reach of local clubs as the costs are huge to use those fields. What is the cost to the eThekwini ratepayers to keep this stadium in operation whilst it remains mainly unused ?
