Taking the Northlink Ferry to Shetland

We made a return to Shetland in autumn 2025. The voyage from Aberdeen to Lerwick with Northlink Ferries was on the M.V. Hjaltland this time. "Hjaltland" is old Norse for "Shetland". The M.V. Hjaltland, built in Finland, entered service in 2002. It measures 125m/410ft in length and has room for 600 passengers and 140 vehicles. This was our second visit to Shetland. We booked a Premium Outside 2-berth Cabin and have included a few photos at the end of the video. From Aberdeen to Lerwick is 216 miles/348km and takes 12 1/4 hours. This crossing is quite notorious for being rough and, in the winter, rough to the extreme. Our voyage in September was very rough, with crew issuing warnings and all of the outside decks being closed for the duration. Luckily, we are very good sailors and enjoyed a delicious meal (the Northlink fish n chips are always delicious), and a couple of drinks in the Magnus Lounge before retiring to our cabin for the night. Smooth or rough, we love taking the Northlink. The staff are always friendly and helpful, the food is good, and the cabins are comfortable. If you are not a good sailor, there is the option to fly to Shetland, too. If you take the ferry (only one out of our four crossings to date has been smooth) we would suggest booking a cabin so you can lay down. Speak to your doctor or pharmicist/chemist before your voyage for advice on motion-sickness remedies, just in case. Shetland is a magical place with the most incredible scenery and wonderful, friendly people. If you ever get the chance to go...do it.
