CCS Europe visits Porthos: Carbon Capture and Storage in Action

The CCS Europe team recently visited the Porthos project in the Port of Rotterdam, a pioneering initiative that is transforming carbon capture and storage from concept to reality. As construction progresses, Porthos is developing Europe’s first large-scale, open-access CO₂ transport and storage system. By 2026, it will begin storing 2.5 million tonnes of CO₂ per year in depleted gas fields under the North Sea, helping to cut industrial emissions and set the stage for future expansion. Reflecting on the visit, Chris Davies, Director of CCS Europe, said: "We’ve talked about developing CCS for so long. It just feels wonderful, to actually see it happening - to see plants being built, pipelines being laid, storage fields being developed. The Porthos project is providing the nucleus for what will become Europe’s first CCS cluster here in Rotterdam." With pipelines being installed and compressor stations taking shape, what was once an ambition is now a reality. And this is just the beginning - Porthos is built for the future, with infrastructure designed to scale up and support wider industrial decarbonisation.
