Class 5: Genre from both an SFL and a Bakhtinian perspective

In this class, we further discuss the notion of GENRE from a systemic functional linguistics perspective. We define GENRE as a social activity and explore the ways in which the Bakhtinian notion of GENRE can inform systemic functional linguistics and vice versa. We further explore the notions of routinization and habituation and attempt to illustrate our points with examples for clarity's sake. More specifically, we make reference to the structure of personal narratives and other types of narratives as accounted for by the Labovian framwork provided with in the context of American variationist sociolinguistics.
