(5 Jul 1999) English/Nat The people of Zimbabwe had one last chance to say goodbye to Vice President Joshua Nkomo, as the 83 year old politician lay in state. Nkomo, hailed as the father of the fight against colonial rule, died from prostate cancer on Thursday (1July) after a political career spanning over 50 years. Joshua Nkomo's body was laid in state at Harare's stadium for thousands of mourners to pay their last respects. He is survived by wife Joanna. Nkomo had been at the forefront of active struggle and through his wise leadership and political acumen had contributed decisively to the liberation of Zimbabwe. SOUNDBITE: (English) "We are bereft.
