David McRaney will talk about how, in the process of writing a book about the science of why it’s so hard to change people's minds, he changed his own mind about how minds change. In this talk, you'll not only learn what works when it comes to persuading, debunking, and challenging conventions to disagreeing well, you'll learn why it is vitally important to understand why some of us saw that photo of a dress as black-and-blue and others as white-and-gold (because it answers a whole of questions about how much of modern discourse can seem impossibly polarized). This talk was part of the exciting lineup for CSICon 2024. CSICon is the premiere conference for science and skepticism. Learn more at: https://csiconference.org/ David McRaney is a journalist and lecturer fascinated with brains, minds, and culture. He created the blog, book, and ongoing podcast You Are Not So Smart, which he calls a "celebration of self delusion." His most recent book is How Minds Change, all about the nuances of communication and persuasion as well as the science behind how (and why) we do (and do not) update our understanding of the world (and ourselves) when faced with novel experiences, ambiguous information, challenging conversations, or a combination of all three. After finishing How Minds Change, he wrote, produced, and recorded a six-hour audio documentary exploring the history of the idea and the word genius, which is the subject of his next book. This talk took place during CSICon in Las Vegas on October 26, 2024
