Today’s Jasiri examined the intersection of security, democracy and representation in Nigeria at a critical moment for the country. We began with the rescue of kidnapped victims in Kogi State following intelligence-led operations that dismantled several bandit camps, raising urgent questions about the persistence of abductions and the broader security architecture protecting Nigerians. From physical safety, we moved to political security as President Bola Tinubu signed the amended Electoral Act 2026 into law ahead of the 2027 general elections. While government officials describe the hybrid model of electronic transmission with manual backup as practical, civil society groups warn it may weaken transparency and reopen familiar loopholes. We were joined by Andrew Mamedu, Country Director of ActionAid Nigeria, to assess what this moment means for electoral integrity and public trust. The conversation then turned to the stalled Reserved Seats for Women Bill and Nigeria’s poor record on female political representation. Can democracy be considered inclusive when women hold less than 5% of elected offices? What would meaningful representation change in real terms?
