The Materials Science Division at LLNL provides broad capabilities and expertise to execute the existing and future national security missions. The nation relies on our materials advances to meet our stockpile stewardship mission, but also the range of other national security missions in energy security, advanced computing, climate management, and deterrence. As a Lab, LLNL is engaged in leading the future of inertial fusion energy, ensuring a safe and secure nuclear stockpile, tackling difficult problems in climate resilience and energy independence, reducing threats both man-made and natural, etc. These missions require us to develop a broad base of novel materials and material systems with broad-ranging performance characteristics, longevity, and reliability, spanning the array of metals, polymers, ceramics, glasses, and composites. MSD contributes impactful capabilities across these mission spaces. This video was approved through Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s review system (LLNL-VIDEO-857325).
