Mendelssohn’s setting of this text from the Lutheran liturgy also conveys the central theme for our concert today, in the text’s pronouncement that “All the lands are full of His Glory.” This unique work is set for double choir (so there are eight vocal parts), and it was the tenth movement of Die Deutsche Liturgie, which Mendelssohn composed in 1846 for the choir of the Berlin Cathedral, which he conducted from 1843. Emperor Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia requested Mendelssohn to compose a setting of the regular parts of Protestant church services at the time. It satisfied demands at the time to return to a simpler style of church music.
