Colourful Eye Makeup for Brown Girls.

Hello! I am back with a makeup video. As a brown girl who has grown up with and is surrounded by warm, strong, wonderful women of ALL skin tones - I have both been subjected to and witness to; several colorist statements - "Isn't that colour too bright for me?" "I don't think you should wear that lip colour - it is too bright / loud for your skin tone" "You should stick to neutrals" and the list goes on. Yes; in some cases - specific colors don't work for some skin tones and undertones - but that is quite nuanced and it's NOT your skin tone's fault! But the messaging that I grew up with; the bias that I needed to unlearn was Fair = you can handle all colors; Brown / deeper: You MUST stick to the browns and neutrals and muted reds. Extrapolate that a bit more - folks who are fair have more options; those who are deeper; not so much. I realize this in hindsight; when I now look at everything with a more mature, a more aware lens. Growing up I was privileged enough to not recognize, realize or even be affected by some of these messages. But now as an adult and a lover of all things beauty, I have started to question these implicit signals and unsolicited opinions - "No! I don't care if that lip colour is too loud for me" "Brown girls can try colorful eyeshadow too" - and that was the inspiration behind this video. Note: I am not perfect; I am still unlearning too. During the course of the video, you do see me express doubt on whether the colors look good on me or whether I would be comfortable enough to wear these outside. Towards the end of the video, I do really like the look though and I hope you do too :) I used 2 Huda Beauty eyeshadow palettes from Huda's Gemstone obsessions collection; Sapphire and Amethyst (sadly they're discontinued today) and decided to sport a fun (to me), color-blocked eye makeup look.
