#2. Be Specific

An encouragement to new music directors: Determine to be specific in your conducting. It may not matter immediately if you're leading a congregation of unskilled singers. But, it's easier to learn something correctly the first time than to re-learn later! We talk about the ictus in this video. The ictus is the instant in which the beat occurs. It is the point at the very bottom of the beat just before the arm travels upwards. I like to emphasize it by tapping my finger down on the ictus, simulating dropping a water drop from my finger! Be comfortable with the style you create, but, BE SPECIFIC!
