Stereolab is just one of “those bands” for me. I first heard about them through an online friend back in the days when the porn on the internet was a lot more pixelated, a lot more wholesome, and a whole lot more hirsute. Those were the heady days before we found out how truly shitty humanity is under the cover of online anonymity. In any case, by the time I owned my very first Stereolab album proper, 1994’s Mars Audiac Quintet, I had been rocking to a bootleg concert that had me going at a fever pitch. Ping Pong, a song that you can hear in the opening montage, is a song that I have heard a million times and that I hope to hear a million more before I shuffle-off this mortal coil. Stereolab's Laetitia Sadier has always been able to plug straight into my brainstem Matrix-style. She's always sounded great and looked great while doing it. And I know I must be sounding like some old-timer waxing poetic about Sofia Loren or Gina Lollobrigida but fuck it, my post, my obsession. Her band’s sound at once playful and elegant. The retro futuristic sound of those analog synths beeping and gurgling. It’s all sheer alchemy. Anyway, I don't wanna come across like one of those music critic pricks. Stereolab have just brought me a great deal of joy over the years. In an alternate universe I wouldn’t have been stuck in some outpost far away from live music and I’d had the opportunity to see Stereolab on the regular over the years; that is not my truth. Things have never lined up for me, and so on October 11, 2025 I finally got my opportunity to catch the band live and in the flesh. And thank fuck for that. The band was in fine form, the crowd in a joyous mood. There is way too much of a back catalog that a setlist with any sense of sanity could do it justice; I’d have to kidnap the band Misery-style. But the band played a nice mix of old and new material and there are zero complaints from this happy camper. I cannot wait to see the band live again soon and maybe one day I will get Ping Pong in a live setting. Thirty years is much too long to have waited to see the band, capisce?
