What are diamonds made of? How are diamonds formed naturally? Where do diamonds come from?

What are diamonds made of? How are diamonds formed naturally? Where do diamonds come from? What are the applications of diamonds? - These are the diamond questions answered in this video. Diamonds are minerals composed of carbon atoms. These carbon atoms are compressed into the tight arrangement of atoms that we find in the diamond crystal structure. In order to create diamonds naturally, huge pressures and temperatures are needed. Natural diamonds were formed in the Earth's mantle billions of years ago. Diamonds were carried upwards from the mantle, towards Earth’s surface, by the lava originating in deep volcanic eruptions. The lava from these violent eruptions traveled upwards, breaking the Earth's crust and carrying a volcanic rock called kimberlite. The vertical tunnels through which the magma traveled to the Earth’s crust are called kimberlite pipes, and it’s inside these kimberlite rocks that we find the diamonds formed billions of years ago in the Earth’s mantle. Diamonds come from diamond mines were established in the locations where the magma containing diamonds broke through the Earth’s crust and created the kimberlite deposits. The five biggest diamond production countries in the world are: Russia, Botswana, The Democratic Republic of Congo, Australia, and Canada. Diamonds have different colors either because of impurities trapped in the diamond structure, or because of certain defects in the diamond lattice, or because of the effects of radiation on diamonds. While the most commonly known uses of diamonds is the use of diamonds as gemstones in jewelleries, there are many other useful applications of diamonds in industry and research. Some of these applications include the use of diamonds for cutting, grinding, and polishing materials, including other diamonds. Nanodiamonds can be used in cancer research for monitoring how well the cancer medication works in cancer patients. Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamonds are used in nuclear magnetic resonance to increase the sensitivity of NMR experiments. In materials research, diamond anvil cells are used to create high-pressure phases of materials.
