WATCH: Looters target truck trapped under low bridge

The driver of an RTT logistics truck found himself stuck under a bridge while a group of looters were waiting to pounce. Video footage of the incident, which was shared on social media, showed a crowd of people following the truck. They forced the rear doors open and helped themselves to its contents. One man ran towards the truck, wearing what appeared to be boxer shorts. Nathaniel Ballakistein, RTT group sales and marketing executive, told News24 the incident happened in the lower Boksburg area, near the Angelo informal settlement on Thursday. The truck was travelling to Johannesburg via Bloemfontein. "It was on route from Bloemfontein into Johannesburg and it was diverted off the highway because of traffic congestion," Ballakistein said. "The reason he was diverted off a main route, was because of some protest action close to that location. That's why he found himself on a non-suitable route." He said the load was sealed. The driver saw some of the residents following the vehicle and when he realised he wouldn't be able to pass under the bridge, he tried to reverse. He also alerted the control room to the fact that his load could be compromised. "He ended up turning around but unfortunately, he did cause a little bit of damage to the vehicle on that bridge," Ballakistein said. The driver and his assistant were unharmed. The vehicle was transporting general merchandise and the company was in the process of returning the consignments to clients for assessment.
