December 27, 1988 - Houston Rockets center Hakeem Olajuwon faced serious consequences following his ill-tempered decision to punch John Shasky in the head early in his team's 101-93 win over the Miami Heat. Not only did he receive a punching foul (guaranteeing Shasky the chance to shoot one free throw, which he missed), but Olajuwon was also fined $1,500 by the National Basketball Association. No word on whether Hakeem ever financially recovered from this. To his credit, Shasky—a graduate of Birmingham Brother Rice just outside Detroit—didn't back down and exacted a modicum of revenge when play resumed, Hakeeming Hakeem with the pump fake and power dunk.
