BobBlast #288 "Abstract Painting & Collage Demo, Part Two" Welcome back to another BobBlast! The previous BobBlast was about starting new paintings for the new year. 2020 is the year that I am concentrating on Abstract Painting and Collage in my studio and as a popular workshop I am teaching all over the country. That said, the previous BobBlast was so exciting, we thought there should be a Part 2 and a Part 3, to show the process from beginning to completion. There are many ways to begin abstract painting. This is just one way I begin the warm up, practice pieces - Start out with my 5 Cs. As mentioned in previous BobBlasts, an abstract painting can have an objective concept (storytelling) or intention concept (word or feeling). This BobBlast shows yet another level of graphic design, communicating the concept by the Composition and the Color Combination. The concepts are "soft and gentle" or "hard-edge and strong." For my daily warm ups, I approach the work in several directions: 1. Black and White only 2. Monochromatic plus black and white 3. Limited Palette plus black and white 4. Four Colors from my Goof-Proof Color Wheel plus black and white Because this BobBlast is part two of the Abstract Painting and Collage demo, I have already gessoed my paper. I start off by taping the paper on a flat board - convenient for carrying and handling the wet paper painting. I am taping the 2 inch border around all four sides. Next step: Brush lots of regular acrylic gel medium on the entire surface. The gel medium is my adhesive for the collage - I begin by tearing and pasting black paper shapes and bold patterns, working towards a desired design that communicates the concept. Next comes paint - all play and experimentation. I wipe away, add isopropyl alcohol and scrape back in with my brush. Time to let the paint and collage dry - stay tuned for Demo Part 3 where you will see the completed painting! To start a new year, start a new approach!
