My 1.000th upload to this channel - which really took off from the 1st lockdown onwards, a project to keep me busy and sane in midst of the collective madness. Like the first Ring cycle in 1955, the second one - in which Mödl took over from Varnay as Brünnhilde, Varnay from Brouwenstijn as Sieglinde and Hotter from Uhde as Gunther - was recorded in Stereo, but never released, but it was also broadcast by Bayerische Rundfunk. Testament obtained and released the Decca tapes, but their CDs had a bizarre flaw. Probably the original DECCA tapes were damaged or inclomplete, so someone patched 43 missing seconds from act 3 (Wohl taugte dir nicht die tör’ge Maid ...) from the performance with Varnay as Brünnhilde. To correct this, I went to the mono broadcast of the performance with Mödl and patched it. The change in sound quality is very noticeable, but at least it is the correct performance with the correct Brünnhilde. For completeness sake I included a file with the Varnay / Mödl transition as published by Testament. Of course I also corrected pitch, which was a little off in the Testament release. Das Rheingold from the second cycle sadly has not turned up anywhere to this date. DIE WALKÜRE Oper in drei Aufzügen von Richard Wagner. Erster Tag zum Bühnenfestspiel "Der Ring des Nibelungen".
