Explore the Gasbuggy Site in northern New Mexico, a fascinating location with an unusual history. In this video, we showcase photos of the site and detailed images of the information boards that provide extra context about its significance. About the Gasbuggy Site: The Gasbuggy Site, located in the Carson National Forest near Farmington, New Mexico, is where an experimental underground nuclear detonation took place on December 10, 1967. The project, part of Operation Plowshare, was an effort to use nuclear explosions for peaceful purposes, such as increasing natural gas production. A 29-kiloton nuclear device was detonated 4,227 feet underground to fracture rock formations and release natural gas trapped in sandstone deposits. While the experiment succeeded in releasing the gas, it was later deemed impractical due to the radioactive contamination of the gas, making it unsuitable for commercial use. Today, the site includes information boards that explain the experiment and its context, giving visitors insight into this unique chapter in energy development history. The area is accessible by vehicle and offers a look at one of the more unconventional approaches to resource extraction. If you're interested in history, energy development, or unique experiments like Operation Plowshare, this video provides a closer look at the Gasbuggy Site and its story.
