Australian composer Paul Schutze was inspired by Brian Eno's ambient music, Miles Davis' jazz-rock and Pierre Henry's musique concrete. Paul Schütze (Melbourne, 1958), who began his career playing percussion in the Fourth Stream Percussion Ensemble and with the experimental quartet of the Laughing Hands, is an Australian electronic composer. Schütze reaches a mature formulation of his "chaotic minimalism" with New Maps Of Hell (Extreme, 1992 - Big Cat, 1996), inspired by the sense of claustrophobia generated by urban chaos. The suite Topology Of A Phantom City, in particular, chugs along under the banner of jazzy organ, guitar and trombone phrases stretched nonchalantly over a violent, syncopated percussion drive. Doubts About Waking, is shaken by tribal turbulence, with the interventions of the instruments becoming increasingly dissonant until the hellish final shambles. On a more serene side winds instead the light, dinocculated trance of Velvet Horizon, more raga-psychedelic than ambient. Dramatic apex of the work is A Soul Reports, whose timbral paste, devoid of rhythm, seems to have refined all the tragedies of humanity, through gloomy hisses and rumbles, suspenseful pauses and irregular beats of a nearby netherworld.
