The surgeries we know today often bear little resemblance to the procedures used centuries ago. Nonetheless, centuries of trial and error, research, and experimentation resulted in procedures that are not only commonplace today, but also highly effective and safe. These advancements will continue as robotic surgery, laser surgery, and microsurgery enable surgeons to treat conditions that were previously thought untreatable. Even in the late 1800s, infection was common, and outcomes were generally poor. Given that #anaesthesia was not used until the mid-to-late 1800s, early techniques were rudimentary, if not barbaric, by today's standards. Surgery today takes many forms and is frequently performed using minimally invasive techniques such as laparoscopy . These advancements have contributed to shorter recovery times, fewer hospitalisation stays, improved outcomes, and fewer complications. Take a look at the timeline of major #surgical developments to get a sense of how much has changed. Before the 19th Century: The concept of surgery was investigated long before recorded history, with early "surgeons" grasping the fundamental concepts of human anatomy and organ systems. Among the notable discoveries: • 6500 BCE: Skulls discovered in France show signs of trepanation, a primitive surgery that involves drilling a hole in the skull. • 1750 BCE: One of the earliest Babylonian legal codes, the Code of Hammurabi, details regulations governing surgeons, medical malpractice, and victim compensation. • 1550 BCE: The Ebers Papyrus, an ancient Egyptian medical treaty, contains instructions on how to treat crocodile bites and severe burns surgically. • 600 BCE: Sushruta, known as the "Father of Surgery," was a pioneer in plastic surgery, including rhinoplasty. • 950: Abulcasis, an Arab physician regarded as one of the greatest mediaeval surgeons, appears to have learned many of his techniques from Greek surgeons. • 1363: French surgeon Guy de Chauliac publishes Chirurgia Magna (Great Surgery), which was considered the standard text for surgeons until the late 17th century. • 1540: The United Barber-Surgeons Company is formed by English barbers and surgeons. These "barber-surgeons" extracted teeth and administered bloodletting. #medical Watch the entire video for more information! _________________________________________________________________ About Evolution of Things Videos about Evolution and history of Things and Technology Written, voiced and produced by Evolution of Things Subscribe now for more Evolution of Things and Technology videos Watch More from Evolution of Things 🟢 Evolution of the Computer • Evolution of Technology 🟠 Evolution of the Phone • Evolution of Technology 🟢 Evolution of the Camera • Evolution of Technology 🟠 Evolution of the Radio • Evolution of Technology _____________________________________________________ Business Inquiries and Contact • For business inquiries, copyright matters or other inquiries please contact us at: [email protected] ❓ Copyright Questions • If you have any copyright questions or issues you can contact us at [email protected] Copyright Disclaimers • We use images and content in accordance with the YouTube Fair Use copyright guidelines • Section 107 of the U.S. Copyright Act states: “Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright.” • This video could contain certain copyrighted video clips, pictures, or photographs that were not specifically authorized to be used by the copyright holder(s), but which we believe in good faith are protected by federal law and the fair use doctrine for one or more of the reasons noted above.
