Date and time Sat, 17 May 2025 19:30 - 22:30 BST Location OPEN Ealing Unit 14 Dickens Yard London W5 2TD No Refunds A monthly showcase for sonically adventurous experimental music in West London in association with OPEN Ealing. Mark Hanslip Mark Hanslip is an improvising saxophonist and technologist based in the north west of England whose solo work augments his acoustic sound with a mix of off-the-shelf hardware, hand-written software and bespoke AI models. This hybrid setup allows him to build frameworks for experimentation with sound. His solo work reflects his love of improvised, jazz, ambient and experimental music, a long-standing commitment to playing saxophone, and an obsession with the possibilities offered by new technologies sparked by his PhD studies at the University of York, which he completed in 2024. Over his 20+ year playing career Mark has performed and recorded with many great improvising musicians, including Nate Wooley, Elliot Sharp, Evan Parker, Paul Dunmall, Mark Sanders, Tony Bianco, Paul Hession, Javier Carmona, Emil Karlsen, Federico Reuben, Andrew Cheetham, Dominic Lash and Olie Brice. Dolor Nocturno Audiovisual project created by drummer and sound designer Jesu Piceno and developed along side artist Ester Ricci on the Pacific Mexican coast on June 2024. Focused on experimenting the relationship between free improv and symbolism throughout the free association, both for the artists and the viewers. Inspired by the sounds, colors and shapes of the night and the sea, this project embodies influences from different genres such as free jazz, improvisation, ambient, noise and punk-rock. Acoustic Survey x Flooded Access Acoustic Survey aka Jakub Rokita is a sound installation and visual artist with work focussing on audio-responsive sound and intermedia installations. Within these performances, audiences become co-creators of the work. His collaborative and solo projects investigate the acoustic qualities of post industrial and post commercial spaces; sounds of instruments, field recordings and found objects become vessels capturing the resonances of those disused rooms. Musician and visual artist Martin Lau’s sound work involves the creation of improvised music/soundscapes using electronics and woodwinds, and attempts to connect to an expansiveness as evoked by outer space and the deep sea. His pursuit of timbre-based electronic music can be traced back to his school days. He performs under the name Flooded Access and hosts the monthly experimental music showcase Ealing Extranormal. Matt Atkins Matt Atkins is an improvising percussionist and sound/visual artist who uses electronics, objects and tape loops in his work. He has released music on labels such as Falt, Rusted Tone Recordings, Invisible City, Whitelab Recs, tsss tapes, Coherent States, Steep Gloss, Flaming Pines, Wabi Sabi Tapes, Dasa Tapes and Chocolate Monk, among others. Since 2006 he has run the label MRM recordings. In 2020 he began curating and presenting a show for CAMP radio called Auricular Shelter.
