Ochsner Rush Health offers a high-tech option for lung biopsies using the Ion endoluminal system. This robotic tool helps doctors take tissue samples from the lungs in a safer and more precise way. Ochsner Rush is the first healthcare system to bring this technology to Meridian and the surrounding areas. The Ion system is designed to solve a tough problem in lung biopsies: reaching deep into the lungs to collect samples. It uses a super-thin, flexible tube that can navigate far into the lungs with incredible accuracy. Compared to older, more invasive methods, this system gives doctors better control and precision during the procedure. It is also considered safer, carrying significantly less risk than a needle biopsy through the chest. This new technology is minimally invasive, meaning it’s easier on patients. It is a painless, same-day procedure. It improves accuracy, helps patients recover faster, and reflects Ochsner Rush Health’s dedication to providing advanced, patient-focused care. “This tool lets us reach parts of the lung we couldn’t access before,” said Dr. Asad Khan, MD, an Interventional Pulmonologist and Critical Care Specialist at Ochsner Rush Health. “Offering this minimally invasive option is a game-changer for lung cancer care. It allows us to diagnose and plan treatment earlier, which leads to better outcomes for our patients.” Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in both men and women in the U.S. It kills more people than breast, prostate and colon cancer combined. According to the American Cancer Society, about 226,650 new cases of lung cancer will be diagnosed in 2025. For people at high risk, yearly lung cancer screenings can improve survival rates. If a small nodule is found early, before it spreads, it’s more likely to be treated successfully. With the Ion system, patients at Ochsner Rush Health can benefit from this advanced, minimally invasive way to diagnose and stage lung cancer while reducing risks. “At Ochsner Rush our pulmonary team works together as one, closely coordinating with a variety of other surgical and oncology services,” said Dr. Khan. “Each of us has different specialties, so we can provide the most complete and advanced care possible for our patients.” Dr. Asad Khan is the only Interventional Pulmonologist in the region. After 12 years of medical training in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary and Critical Care, he is further fellowship trained in advanced lung procedures from the leading MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, and now calls Meridian home.
