(11 Jun 1999) English/Nat U-S Secretary of State Madeleine Albright has been touring refugee camps and talking to U-S troops in Macedonia. Her visit came as NATO forces readied for their peacekeeping mission in neighbouring Kosovo. Albright was greeted by British Lieutenant General Michael Jackson, commander of NATO forces in Macedonia. The U-S Secretary of State arrived in Macedonia as Serbian forces were withdrawing from Kosovo after 11 weeks of bombardment by NATO. A NATO-led force is poised to move into the Serbian province to keep the peace. Albright and the foreign ministers of seven other world powers, including Russia, have just ended four days of talks dominated by Kosovo. Albright was greeted in Macedonia by the commander of NATO forces in the country, British Lieutenant General Michael Jackson. Jackson, reportedly plans to be in Pristina, the provincial capital of Kosovo by Saturday afternoon. She then left for a visit to a refugee camp, outside the Macedonian capital, housing some of the hundreds of thousands of ethnic Albanians recently forced to flee their homes. As she headed to the camp with promises of help, she counselled against vengeance and said the goal now was to establish a multi-ethnic democracy in Kosovo. Next she visited the American troops who are part of the NATO force, thanking them for their efforts in freeing Kosovo. SOUNDBITE: (English) "This is a part of the world, in which World War One began, a lot of World War Two was fought and you are now bringing a new history where the people of Kosovo are being delivered hope and to live in freedom according to the way they want to live, so thank you very very much and god speed and I am so very very proud to be part of your team."
