The Medieval village of Rocamadour - One of the Grand Sites of France 🇫🇷

The village of Rocamadour clings to a precipitous cliff above the River Alzou. Since the Middle Ages it has been a major site of pilgrimage and more recently tourist destination. The lower part of the site is the village where today cafes and restaurants jostle with souvenir shops. From here a stairway (The Grand Escalier) climbs to the Religious City where a cluster of chapels hang from the cliff. In the late 12th century this was a destination for even Kings of England and France. Even in recent years Popes have made visits here. Continuing to climb a path lined with Stations of the Cross lead to a Sanctuary before arriving at a castle which crowns the cliff.
