Someone called the police on us while filming this video — watch to the end to hear what happened! Just minutes from a Canadian city of over 100,000 people, an off-grid island village still exists. No running water. No electricity. No utilities of any kind. And yet, people still live here. J O I N U S F O R M O R E A D V E N T U R E S : • Visiting the Most Famous Tree in Canada: B... A B O U T T H I S V I D E O : Tucked beside Pipers Lagoon in Nanaimo BC, this small cluster of cabins has quietly endured for nearly a century. Built during the Great Depression by people making their living from the sea, the island has survived war, displacement, development pressure, and decades of legal uncertainty. Today, the cabins remain — owned by descendants of the original families, carefully maintained, and passed down through inheritance. In this short documentary, we visit the island to experience it firsthand. We explore how this community came to be, why it still exists, and what places like this reveal about heritage, belonging, and our relationship to the land in an increasingly uniform world. If you enjoyed this film, consider sharing it with someone who loves local history, quiet places, or stories that don’t quite fit the modern world. Subscribe for more thoughtful, place-based documentaries, and leave a comment — we’d love to hear what this place stirred in you.
