◼️ If we look at the leading causes of death across the country, according to the ONS data, aside from Covid, which did not exist prior to 2020, the only cause that is above average when you adjust for age is cause unknown. ◼️ Some (but not all) of the excess deaths - more than 2015/19 for a typical week - we see at the moment can be explained by a changing population structure. With more older people you get more deaths. So applying the chance of dying for each age group to the 2022 population structure, it reduces the excess by around a half. ◼️ After taking out deaths linked to Covid, over the past 3 months we see deaths in older people (65+) below average, but deaths in people aged 30-59 above what you would expect. ◼️ Data suggests we are seeing higher than expected deaths recently linked to heart issues and diabetes. ◼️ We have recently seen excessive pressures and Accident and Emergency services across the country. With patients unable to be offloaded from ambulances, which means fewer ambulances if you get seriously ill. ◼️ The cost of living crisis may contribute to more deaths this winter with bills set to rise for energy. We know that if people freeze and are in fuel poverty this can lead to deaths. #costofliving #nhs #deaths #excessdeaths #mortality #uk #covid19 #suddendeath #heartattack #strokes #a&e #statistics #fuelpoverty
