Unit 3 Concept 2 to download PDF file: https://drive.google.com/file/d/18Pcm... Fuel Any substance that produces thermal energy when it is burned. Notes : 1- sun is the main source of thermal energy produced by fuel 2- oil, coal and natural gas are forms of fuel, extracted from underground and they are most commonly used in our lives (warming, running transportation, generating electricity) Uses of some different forms of fuel Purpose Fuel that may be used Cooking Natural gas, coal, wood Generating electricity Oil, natural gas, coal Warming Coal, wood Operating means of transportation Gasoline(oil) or natural gas Thermal energy produced from same fuel can be used for different purposes so Use of coal in cooking: Light energy(from sun) chemical energy (stored in coal)thermal energy (when burning coal) Use of coal in generating electricity: Light energy(from sun) chemical energy (stored in coal) thermal and kinetic in (Electric power station)electrical energy (transferred through wires) Gasoline Fuel made of oil Renewable energy resources Non-renewable energy resources Natural, can be replaced Ex: water, solar energy, wind energy Natural, used at fast rate can’t be replaced easily. Ex: coal, natural gas, oil Renewable energy resources Continually renew or replace the part that has been used / consumed. So they will not run out. Non-renewable energy resources they run out when consumed and cannot be renewed in a short time. Biofuel Fossil fuel It is the fuel produced from living organisms that can be replaced (ex: plants) “renewable fuel” It’s primary source is the sun Examples: Wood (oldest fuel used in warming and cooking food) Charcoal made from wood Some plants such as grass, corn and wood chips can be used for making a liquid fuel. Conservation(saving) of biofuel: Cutting down trees leads to (Deforestation) (negative effects on environment) Produced from old living organisms(plants or animals) that were buried and decomposed over long period of time “Non-renewable fuel” Primary source is sun Examples: Oil and natural gas formed when remains of marine organisms (sea animals) were decomposed Coal is formed when the remains of plants were decomposed. Conservation of fossil fuel : They take millions of years to be formed so they can’t be renewed easily. Formation of coal “ fossil fuel from died plants” : 300 million years large area covered with swamps with plants growing nearby When plants died their remains covered with hundreds of meters of mud and rocks Due to heat and pressure the remains turned into coal. Formation of Oil / Natural Gas “ Fossil fuel from died marine organisms” : Marine organisms died and settle on ocean floor Covered by layers of rocks and sediments Due to heat and pressure the remains turned into Oil. Oil water Non- renewable energy resource Conservation of oil : Rationalize it’s using. (use it wisely) 1. Reduce using private vehicles(cars) 2. Use public means of transportation. Renewable energy resource Conservation of water : Rationalize it’s using. (use it wisely) 1- Avoid wasting or polluting water 2- Growing plants that do not need large amounts for irrigation
