Dan Nebel, French Horn Angela Steiner, Piano Program: JEAN FRANÇAIX (1912-1997) Divertimento I. Introduzione II. Aria di Cantabile III. Canzonetta BRIAN S. WILSON (b. 1962) The Water Garden RICHARD STRAUSS (1864-1949) Andante, Op. Post. -INTERMISSION FRANCES MEIER (b. 1945) New Mexico Mesas I. Sunrise II. Shadows and Sunshine III. November CARL CZERNY (1791-1857) Andante e Polacca Program Notes: French composer and conductor Jean Françaix began composing at the age of six and had his first piece published in 1922 at the age of 10. A virtuosic pianist, he continued to compose neoclassical for a huge variety of instrumental combinations throughout his life. Divertimento for horn and piano was written in 1953, and his typically witty is evident throughout. American composer Brian S. Wilson wrote The Water Garden for his wife, hornist Ruth Wilson, in 2020 and depicts his reflections on the water feature in their backyard in Rohnert Park, CA. Brian has been a Professor of Music and the Department Chair at Sonoma State University since 2001. Dan has had the pleasure of collaborating with the Wilsons since meeting them in 2015 when he was an enlisted bandsman with the USAF Band of the Golden West stationed at nearby Travis AFB, CA. German composer Richard Strauss originally wrote his Andante for horn and piano in 1888 as a gift for his parents on their silver wedding anniversary. Richard’s father Franz Strauss was the principal horn of the Bavarian Court Opera and one of the most famous hornists of his generation. It is the only completed movement of an intended full sonata for horn and piano. American composer Frances Meier, a longtime resident of Los Alamos, NM, taught Dan organ, piano, and music theory while he was in high school. This piece, contemplating the beautiful landscapes surrounding Los Alamos, was commissioned by Dan for this world-premiere performance. Austrian composer, virtuoso pianist, and teacher Carl Czerny studied with Beethoven and taught Franz Liszt. Today, he is best known for his piano exercises, such as the School of Velocity. Andante e Polacca was written in 1848, possibly for a collaboration with horn virtuoso Eugène Vivier, but was not published until 1973. Although valves had been invented three decades earlier, the horn part was intended for the hand horn, and just as Beethoven’s Sonata Op. 18, the piano part is equal and often outshines the horn part’s in virtuosity.
