Mikhail Bakhtin’s concept of monologism serves as the theoretical foil to his more celebrated concept of dialogism. In monologism, a single "ultimate" truth or authorial consciousness dominates the discourse, effectively silencing the independent validity of other voices He writes,“[m]onologism, at its extreme, denies the existence outside itself of another consciousness with equal rights and equal responsibilities, another I with equal rights (thou). With a monologic approach (in its extreme or pure form) another person remains wholly and merely an object of consciousness, and not another consciousness” (Bhakhtin 1984).
