We had the opportunity to visit Orford Ness National Nature Reserve - a National Trust site in Suffolk, UK, and the largest shingle spit in Europe. It has a dramatic history and from 1913, when it was purchased by the War Department (later to become the Ministry of Defence), it has been a military testing and radio monitoring site until it was sold to the National Trust in 1993. It really is a fascinating place. Tickets must be booked in advance, and access via a 5 minute boat ride is included in the price.
