Welcome back the next Part of my South Island 2024 series and it’s gonna be a wild one! I’m practically crossing the South Island, hitting some legendary sights, and battling some seriously brutal weather! The journey kicked off in the town of Riverton, with the sun shining on the Tasman Sea, it was the perfect day to start the mission. First stop: Bluff, considered by most to be the southernmost tip of the mainland! Cruising awesome roads and the rolling hills of Southland. I make a quick pit stop at the iconic Stirling Point sign – a must-do for any South Island adventure. Next on the list was Invercargill, I took a quick look around E Hayes and the awesome display of bikes including Burt Munro’s famous Indian and then checked out the statue, refuelled and hit the road again. Ripped through Gore, Tapanui, Alexandra, Cromwell and Wanaka and then things got interesting. What started as a few clouds quickly turned into a full-blown storm. We're talking torrential rain, strong winds, and visibility down to a few metres. By the time I reached Haast I was soaked to the bone, freezing cold, and pretty darn tired. The rain never really eased off as I entered the West Coast. The scenery was breathtaking - towering mountains, lush rainforests, and the mighty Tasman Sea crashing against the coastline. The final leg of the journey took me to Franz Josef Glacier. Arriving cold, wet, and utterly exhilarated, the glacier hiding in the clouds. Maybe not quite the picture-perfect arrival I were hoping for, but hey it’s part of riding right. Riverton to Franz Josef the long way was a challenging ride, for sure, but one that will definitely stay with me. If you're planning a South Island motorcycle trip, be sure to factor in the unpredictable weather. Pack for all conditions, and don't be afraid to adjust your plans on the fly.
