Boo! In case anyone is interested - Free Download of my 2016 Halloween Album: available for all my Patreon subscribers until the end of this month! / istomusic This song has a long history. It was originally from Weill/Brecht's Threepenny Opera, which was written and produced in Germany during the Weimar Republic, but based on John Gay's The Beggar's Opera, an English opera by John Gay from 1728. John Gay's opera was inspired by Jonathan Swift, who said "what think you, of a Newgate pastoral among the thieves and whores there?" in a letter to Alexander Pope. Gay's opera satirized the Italian style, and included characters based on famous criminals of the day and melodies based on Scottish tunes. The names in this song all come from that opera. Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht based their Threepenny Opera on The Beggar's Opera, incorporating music that was inspired by jazz and German dance music of the 1920s. The Ballad of Mack the Knife from their opera became a hit in the United States when one of the translations was recorded by Louis Armstrong, and later by Bobby Darin. It has since become a standard. There is a famous version in which Ella Fitzgerald forgets the lyrics and ad libs some new ones in Berlin. Interesting to think how far some of the material had traveled when Fitzgerald brought the tune back to Germany and let the lyrics be filtered yet again through her brilliant brain. My personal favorite American jazz version is the one that Bing Crosby did in the couple of years between the Armstrong version and the Darin version.
