This was a visit to the Belgrade Fortress in the Stari Grad municipality of Belgrade (Beograd) in #Serbia. Part of a visit after driving from Bucharest in Romania. Its an awesome site and sight, with parts dating back to 86 AD and sits overlooking the Danube and Sava Rivers, about 125 metres high. Very strategic position and consists of an upper and lower area and the beautiful #Kalemegdan Park. Admission is free and you can drive right up to an inner parking lot near one of the main gates, but you will pay a parking toll on exit. Suggest staying in Dorcol area if you are coming to see sights and visit the fortress. You can walk from in the Dorcol area to it and the suburb is older and more established, yet very cool with a relaxed atmosphere and huge variety of pubs, cafes, restaurants. I would say put a full day aside to see the whole fortress, its upper and lower citadels, the park and the Military Museum contained on its grounds. I probably saw half of it in the time I had, but will go back to do the rest and see the Museum at some stage. I was a little sad that such a historic site, the most visited by tourists and declared a Monument of Culture and actually housing a centre for cultural protection onsite, had one area that really needs attention. I didn't want to show it in the video, but thought if I did and somebody sees it, maybe it will trigger a response. The turrets above Leopolds Gate which people enter through are covered in graffiti, broken glass, rubbish and cigarette buts. Really not safe for young kids and just really looks ugly. Its a great monument and special and I hope someone cleans that area up as the rest of the fortress is pristine and impeccable and that one area should not detract from that. Overall, definitely a must visit site and I will go back for a full look and take some tours to the dungeons etc. Also lastly, thanks to all the friendly Serbians, you make someone from outside feel welcome and do it naturally.
