Recently, myself and several friends (including @JohnDeere318Guy, @popeofjohndeere, @cunninghamscadets8924, and @ringerlandscaping608) attended our friend Tyler's wedding on Shelter Island, which is just off the east coast of Long Island, NY. Tyler and his family have a VERY impressive collection of tractors, diesel engines, hit-and-miss engines, and early outboard engines, many of which have spent their entire life on Shelter Island and found their way into the family's collection upon their retirement. Tyler and his father and grandfather are proud of their collection, and several of their engines are started regularly throughout the year to keep them in good shape. Being able to see each of these units in operation was such a treat (not to mention the rest of their collection), and it's great to know that they are all in good hands. Thanks for having us out there Tyler and congratulations on your wedding! Listen to the awesome sounds from four different diesel engines which are my favorites out of their collection - this includes not one, but TWO massive Caterpillar D342 engines which powered the Shelter Island ferry boats in their previous life. These 300-HP, high-torque, low-RPM engines were also used in the D8H and D8K track-type tractors built from 1966 to about 1982. The earlier one is naturally aspirated, while the newer repainted one is turbocharged and uses an air starter. Also featured is a very rare Detroit Diesel 1-71, the earliest variant of the long-lived "71" series two-cycle engines which started production in 1938 (and helped us through WWII). The 1-71 is on a generator unit and puts out about 15 HP at 1200 RPM. There are only a handful of these engines still known to exist. The third one shown is a 1940's Sheppard Diesel model 7, produced in Hanover, PA and putting out about 8 HP from its single cylinder. This unit powers a 5 kW generator and is liquid cooled. Perhaps just as rare as the 1-71 Detroit, albeit much quieter!
