What is Brahmotsavam? "Brahma" means "Brahat" or "Great". 'Utsavam" means "Yagna/m". Brahmotsavam means that among all the utsavams, rituals, or poojas performed inside the temple, this is the grandest of them all. The origin of the celebration traces back to Lord Brahma, the Creator who first conducted this festival to pay homage to Lord Balaji at Tirupathi. Lord Brahma worshiped Lord Balaji on the banks of the holy Pushkarini river in Tirumala as a way to give thanks for the Lord's protection of mankind. This Utsavam is called "Brahmotsavam" (Brahma's Utsavam). On Thursday June 5th, the evening prior to the start of Brahmotsavam, prayers will be offered to all the Deities in the temple (Bhagavat Prarthana), followed by Rakshabandhanam (holy yellow thread will be tied to the wrists of Deities, priests and Yajamans) for the commitment to the Brahmotsavam. Following this ritual, Ankurarpanam will be performed (this ritual signifies preparing the ground for the three day festival). We will start the morning of Friday June 6th with daily worship of the deities, followed by Dwara, Thorana, Dwaja, Kumbharadhana. This ritual consists of 4 different forms of worship and will be performed in the Yaga Shala.
