Surf riding is a long way from whatever area of expertise I might possess (Now there's an understatement). Recently however, in amongst a mixed lot of 16mm movie film, I found this brief (5¾ minute) coverage of the initial Surfing Championship contest held at Manly, NSW, Australia. By the amount of noticeable wear (scratches) on this short, I surmised that had been shown many times. In turn, this indicates that it was of significant interest to surfing fans. In case it might now be of some interest current fans of the sport, I thought it worth preserving on YouTube. The following facts were obtained via the internet: It was 1964 and the world’s best surfers converged on Sydney’s manly beach for the first official world surfing Championships. Sydney surfer Kenny Williams was asked to run the judging which was loosely based on style and technique. The local council agreed to bulldoze the beach and bank it to create maximum viewing space for the thousands of spectators that were expected. An estimated 70,000 people flocked to the manly beach to watch the finals. The finals of the juniors and Women’s were held on Sunday along with the Men’s finals which included several seeded surfers. The favourites for the senior men’s event were overseas surfers, especially Hawaiian Joey Cabell and American John Richards, while Americans Linda Benson and Marge Calhoun were the favourites to win the women’s event. The legacy of Sunday 17 May 1964 remains although, regardless of it being held on a Sunday, it is okay not to wear a suit and tie on the beach like many of the spectators did back then.
