Presenter: Prof. Maria-Gloria Basáñez. Summary:The 2021–2030 Roadmap of the World Health Organization (WHO) on Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) has proposed targets for the control, elimination or eradication of its 20 prioritised NTDs. Prior to the publication of the Roadmap in 2021, the WHO initiated a process of consultation with the NTD community, including mathematical modellers. Modellers used transmission dynamics frameworks to gain insights into the feasibility of attaining such goals by 2030 with current and novel intervention and diagnostic tools, and helped identify risks that would need to be mitigated. In this talk, I will share the work we conducted on Chagas disease (targeted for elimination as a public health problem), Taenia solium taeniasis/cysticercosis (targeted for intensified control), and onchocerciasis (targeted for interruption of transmission). I will discuss alternative and complementary intervention strategies, as suggested by the modelling, that could help accelerate the reaching of the WHO targets. In the case of Chagas disease, these would entail aetiological treatment in addition to vector control. For taeniasis/cysticercosis, the impact on porcine cysticercosis prevalence of mass drug administration (MDA) with oxfendazole in the pig population; pig vaccination; combination of oxfendazole MDA plus vaccination, and MDA with praziquantel in the human population were modelled. For onchocerciasis, MDA with moxidectin or with macrofilaricidal drugs (which kill adult worms) were compared to MDA with ivermectin, and the impact of vector control was also explored.
