USDA-APHIS Safeguards Diplomatic Gift of Cherry Trees from Japan

USDA’s Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is playing a key role in the acceptance of a diplomatic gift of cherry trees from Japan. The trees undergo inspection and quarantine in accordance with APHIS’ requirements to ensure they are free of invasive plant pests and diseases that could harm U.S. agriculture and natural resources. In time, the trees will be planted at the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C., to replace trees that are being removed to repair the sea wall. The trees are a symbol of the deep and lasting friendship between Japan and the United States.
