One of the most exciting images in astronomy from the last decade was the faint, fuzzy, orange glowing doughnut that showed us our first glimpse of a black hole. This remarkable picture of such an elusive object is one of the latest in a long line of discoveries made possible by radio astronomy. Dr Josie Rawes gives an introduction to the fundamental concepts of radio astronomy, explores how we can build telescopes the size of the Earth, and presents some current areas of research, from fast radio bursts to extragalactic jets and quasars.
