What Is Predestination?

The Greek words used are: proorizo, to predetermine, decide beforehand, to foreordain; proginosko, to have knowledge beforehand to foreknow, to predestinate; — and prognosis, foreknowledge. What is predestination? Two of the Scriptures in question are: Romans 8, “For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called . . . .” (Romans 8:29-30) Ephesians 1, Just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will (Ephesians 1:4-5). In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory (Ephesians 1: 11-12). The other three instances are similar. Some have looked at these scriptures and have concluded that our future is predetermined. This however ignores many other statements in the Bible that add clarity to this matter. There are no verses in the Bible that say anyone is predestined to be lost. But God has predestined that “all” will be given a chance to be saved—i.e. to repent and receive God’s gift of eternal life (John 3:16; 1 Timothy 2:3-6; 2 Peter 3:9). Christ said He would build His Church (ekklesia), the whole body of Christians scattered throughout the earth (Matthew 16:18). Predestination has to do with the time when one is called — now, in this age, or later. The key to understanding this subject is Paul’s statement “whom He predestined, these He also called” (Romans 8:30). Each child of God is called to become a part of a “Body” (i.e. the church) and has been added to that “Body” throughout the ages. The New Testament teaches that only those whom God calls (have their minds open to understanding) will be able to come to Christ in any age. He is simply not calling all people at the same time. (John 6:44) The Bible also teaches that all mankind who has ever lived, and who have died without that calling, will be raised to a physical life over 1000 years in the future to have their opportunity to choose God’s way of life.
