Gregory James Smits is an American historian, academic, and specialist in Japanese and East Asian history. He is Professor of History and Asian Studies at Pennsylvania State University, where his research focuses on the history of Japan broadly defined, with particular expertise in Ryukyuan history, early modern thought, environmental history, and the cultural impact of earthquakes. Smits was born in Columbia, Missouri, and earned his BA from the University of Florida (1983), MA from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, and Ph.D. from the University of Southern California. He has published numerous influential works, including Visions of Ryukyu: Identity and Ideology in Early-Modern Thought and Politics (1999), Maritime Ryukyu, 1050-1650 (2018), Early Ryukyuan History: A New Model (2024), and most recently The Ryukyu Islands: A New History, Stone Age to Present (2025).
