At the Jaipur Literature Festival 2018, the former president of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai, opened up about the days when the Taliban had begun to hunt him down. “We were on a mountain, we were attacked - I am a Gandhian in lots of ways…I did not want to fight” said Karzai. He told the companions with him that they must not fire at them, and thus the alternative was not to fight but abandon the place altogether. “We were 150 people or so and I asked everyone to go back to their villages,” and 11-12 of them went towards a far-away destination, 80 kilometres on foot. After 23 hours of walking, when Karzai and his companions arrived at a destination, they saw a little hut and a farmer who recognised him. The man looked after them, fed them, and once they returned from another inconclusive journey, he advised them not to walk in that direction because they might be caught by the Taliban. “Go into the mountainous area”, the farmer said. Within 4-5 hours of their departure, the Taliban had come, harassed and abused him, and yet the farmer did not confess that Karzai and his companions were at his house. “That’s how we were saved”, said Karzai. After 20 days when he had become the President, Karzai sent the farmer a message to come and see him. “He didn’t care; he said you are the king now! I don’t want to come and see you there.” Watch full video : • #ZeeJLF2018 | The Great Survivor Jaipur Literature Festival Social media Follow us on Social Media – https://www.facebook.com/JaipurLitFes... / jaipurlitfest / jaipurlitfest / jprlitfest #Hamid_Karzai #Hamid_karzai_on_taliban #Taliban
