Samba of the Sun - Yuudai Hatanaka | Let's Swing

Performed by NTU Guitar Ensemble, Singapore Polytechnic Guitarists and Ngee Ann Polytechnic Strings at Let's Swing, held on 25 Jan 2025, at SOTA Concert Hall. “Samba de Soleil,” or “Samba of the Sun,” is an original composition by Hatanaka Yudai, a prominent arranger and composer of guitar ensemble and orchestra pieces today. Hatanaka is notoriously multi-talented: his arsenal of skills outside of composing and arranging include classical guitar, oboe, as well as being a member of DANROK, a guitar sextet well known for its unique rendition of popular and classical pieces. He composed “Samba” as the set piece for the All Japan Guitar Competition Ensemble Division in 2021. The piece starts off with a bang, and maintains a high level of energy throughout, with a catchy riff and upbeat melody being passed around from section to section. Hatanaka has also incorporated fun percussive elements to spice up the performance. To top it all off, the fast pace and strong beat makes the piece a fitting one to re-introduce the main ensemble back on stage.
