Phillip Sear plays the second of a set of ten bagatelles from 1838 by the German composer Wilhelm Taubert. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ In 2011 the bicentenary of Liszt's birth was rightly celebrated. However, the bicentenaries of two other once-important composers - Wilhelm Taubert and Ferdinand Hiller - also born in 1811 received much less attention. Taubert (1811-1891) spent much of his professional life in Berlin, where he composed, conducted and performed. Although he wrote six operas, concerti, orchestral, chamber and piano music, he is remembered today chiefly for his songs. He studied piano with Ludwig Berger, who also taught Mendelssohn, who was a friend and supporter of Taubert. Indeed, Taubert was writing pieces in a similar style to Mendelssohn's 'Songs without Words' at about the same time as Mendelssohn, and possibly earlier. In this context, a Savoyard is someone from the Savoie region of France, rather than a Gilbert & Sullivan enthusiast! Indeed, a viewer has suggested that the piece probably relates to a 'petit ramoneur savoyard' - a term for a child chimney sweep from the Savoie region, who worked in teams, as you can read here: https://tinyurl.com/y8ukwjkn . One such boy is shown in my thumbnail image. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Played by Phillip Sear http://www.psear.co.uk (Email: piano4@psear.33mail.com WhatsApp: http://wa.me/441444483794 ) TikTok: / pianogems
